Proper hand care is critical when you use barbells and dumbbells regularly.
Over time you will develop calluses. This is actually a good thing. Once you have a nice callus foundation on your hands you are able to last longer in workouts without having to stop or rest because your hands hurt.
Again, calluses are not bad, but in fact a good thing - as long as you properly maintain them. Properly maintained hands in this case means that you regularly file down calluses before they get to far raised above your normal skin level. It's when you let your calluses grow into mounds on your hands that you develop rips and tears.
